EAA YE Logo Young Eagles Program

What are Young Eagles?
In 1992, the EAA launched a program designed to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.
Since then, more than 1.2 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight through the program. Young Eagles have been registered in more than 90 different countries and have been flown by nearly 40,000 volunteer pilots.

Our chapter, EAA UL1, participates in this program during many of our fly-in events. We also join up with other EAA chapters in the area during some special Young Eagle events.

So what will your flight be like?
The biggest question on your mind might be about the actual flight. So what should you expect?

EAA UL1's Simulator Plane First, the Microlite Flyers have created a simulator plane. So you climb in, and one of our volunteers explains and identifys the parts that control the airplane.
They will also explain the instument panel so you can learn about the dials and switches in a plane before you get to the busy flight line. We have wired many of the switches to operate some devices and lights too! Ask as many questions as you would like, our volunteers love to teach people about flying! Simulator's Instrument Panel
In a J3 Cub with Pilot Next, you will be escorted to a real airplane with one of our volunteer pilots waiting for you. Climb on in! The seat belts are buckled, and headphones are adjusted. You will be able to talk with your pilot during the flight. Well-wishers and photos are welcome when no props are turning.
Once in the air, you'll see the earth and sky in a new and exciting way. You'll experience the wonderful freedom of flight that many people only dream about. If you are like most Young Eagles, you'll remember this experience for the rest of your life! Aerial View
Most Young Eagle flights last between 15 and 20 minutes. Once back on the ground, there will be additional time for you to ask questions about the flight. Ask away! The volunteers will be happy to tell you more about flying and various types of airplanes. And don’t forget, you’ll also receive an official Young Eagles certificate, which is signed by your personal pilot and EAA's Young Eagle Chairman Harrison Ford.

Next Steps
We know you will enjoy your first flight so much, that you will want to learn how you can learn more about flying. The Microlite Flyers are pleased to offer scholarships to EAA's Air Academy.
Each year in the fall, kids between the ages of 12 and 13 years of age are invited by our chapter members to write an essay about "Why I want to attend the EAA Air Academy". A panel of judges review these essays, and select the one they feel best shows the enthusiasm to learn to fly. That youth can then attend an Air Academy session the following spring or summer.

"Spread Your Wings" Scholarships
We just received the following information from Bob Campbell, Director - Museum & Resident Education Experimental Aircraft Association:

"I'm delighted to be able to share a wonderful opportunity for high school students in the greater Milwaukee area. Thanks to the generosity of two local aviation enthusiasts, EAA is able to offer the following FREE scholarships to deserving youth:
Up to 30 scholarships valued at $900 each are available for current high school sophomore and junior students to attend a special camp session called "Spread Your Wings" at the EAA Air Academy resident camp in Oshkosh, WI, on August 12-17, 2007. Participants will spend 5 nights at the Air Academy Lodge immersed in hands-on aviation activities, including real flight experiences.
Since 1984, thousands of young people have attended EAA's summer camps. For many of them, it became an important stepping-stone in both their personal development and their appreciation for aviation.
All current high school sophomores and juniors in the Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan and Washington counties are eligible to apply. People who want to make aviation opportunities available to deserving youths in the Milwaukee area have provided these scholarships. Do you know a young person that fits the bill? Application forms can be obtained by calling 1-888-322-3229, or e-mailing airacademy@eaa.org . "
